The Chapters and Melodies Tag

“Later!” The word, the voice, the attitude.

First line in Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman

I’m doing the Chapters and Melodies Tag today! I haven’t actually been tagged to do it but it’s a music-related book tag so what did you expect me to do? I first saw Lotus @Pages of Starlight do it so remember to check out her version as well.

The Rules:

  • Link back to the creators’ posts – I have 12% of a plan & A Curly Sue’s Ramblings
  • Thank the person who tagged you
  • Answer the prompts and use the original graphics
  • Tag 5 bloggers who would enjoy doing this tag
  • Notify them by commenting on their blog
  • Use the tag “Chapters & Melodies Tag” in your post
  • Have fun!
If you're lost and alone, or you're sinkin' like a stone
Carry on
May the past be the sound of your feet upon the ground
Carry on

This was surprisingly difficult but then I remembered the song Carry On by fun. which has the same title as Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, one of my all-time favorite books. It’s also very appropriate since the titles in this trilogy are all based on song lyrics. Now I have to go and listen to more songs by fun. because I forgot they even existed.

Do you get wild when I'm alone?
Do you ever get unreliable?
Before you pass out drunk on the floor
Shining like a Tiffany, do you ever think of me?
Or do you get unreliable?
Unreliable, unreliable

This is completely random; the song Unreliable by Scarlet Pleasure has nothing to do with the book it makes me think of which is Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman. It’s just that Scarlet Pleasure is my favorite band and they released this song as I was reading Call Me by Your Name so I, of course, listened to it obsessively. Literally think it was the only song I listened to for the week it took me to finish that book so now the two are just inseparable in my mind. The song is better than the book if anyone cares.

The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks, which, I must admit, I don’t remember much about but going by the title, I think it’s a safe bet that there’s music in it. I think there’s some piano-playing and a father who really wants his troubled daughter to do the piano-playing.

Let me tell it to you now
You're stronger than the wind
If they ever let you down
The winter would set in
Back then my mother showed me all
My frozen heart could do

I’m thinking there are people who knew this was coming as my OTP is Vasya and Morozko from the Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden and Unbreakable by KEiiNO is a song that is specifically based on those books. The song itself isn’t so much about Vasya and Morozko but honestly, any mention of winter and all I can think about is Morozko so it definitely counts.

All those lonely miles that you ride
Now you'll walk with no one by your side
Did you ever even care
With your swords and your stupid hair
Now watch me laugh as I burn all the memories of you

I’m assuming it’s okay to pick a song from a TV show because I only just recently finished season 2 of The Witcher and Burn Butcher Burn (sung by Jaskier also known as Joey Batey) has been on my mind ever since. You probably need to have watched the show to truly understand the brilliance behind this song, but it’s just such intelligent song-writing and then Jaskier just sings every word with FEELINGS. I need more songs from Jaskier in the next season!

I don’t normally tag people when I haven’t been tagged myself but I’m thinking Maria @The Character Study and Naemi @A Book Owl’s Corner would have fun with this if you guys haven’t been tagged/done it already. I just adore any post that combines books and music so this was very fun to do! What did you think of my answers? Which song was your favorite if you listened to them?

  1. Ooooh, I’m already in love with this tag because it has got to do with music!!! 🥰 I’m definitely doing it (at some point 😁), so thank you for tagging me!

Also, you’ve shown me that I’ve been incredibly ignorant regarding Rainbow Rowell’s titling skills because I never knew that all the Simon Snow titles were based on song lyrics! 🙈 You’ve just sent me on an intense googling spree to find out more…

I also laughed so hard at your The Last Song description, because even though I haven’t read the book, I have seen the movie – and my memories of what happened in it are so vague that any summary I could have come up with would’ve been even less detailled… Although I think there were lots of stained-glass windows and sea turtles in it and the dad ended up in the hospital??? Like I said, I remember next to nothing 😂

And Unbreakable!!! 🥰 I think it was you who introduced me to it in the first place, and you will be pleased to know it has earned a steady spot in several of my playlists since then 😁 So yeah, I agree, it definitely counts as a Vasya + Morozko OTP song!

And I actually really liked that Witcher song, so maaaaybe I will eventually have to give The Witcher another chance… It’s just that the first episode was so boring! 😅

    1. You’re welcome! 😁 And yes, I believe I read it somewhere that Carry On and Any Way the Wind Blows are taken from Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, a British band because they’re in Britain in those two books and then Wayward Son is from Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas, an American band because they’re in American in that book (anyone who has watched Supernatural is very familiar with that song, and there are also a couple of references to the show in that book).

I’ve also watched the movie based on The Last Song but it clearly didn’t help me 😅 But yes, there is something about the dad being sick and they spend a lot of time on the beach so I’ll believe the sea turtles thing.

As for The Witcher, I actually think the first episode was my favorite in the first season but that might be just because of the fight scene which is basically the only thing I remember from the whole season 😅. Season 2 is definitely better though and I’ll almost say you have to watch just for Jaskier 😁

      1. I stumbled across that explanation during my research as well 😁 – although being the scaredy-cat that I am, I didn’t catch any Supernatural references. I never even made it through one episode without being so terrified that I had to turn it off! 🙈🤣

And I’m not so sure whether I should continue watching The Witcher then, either 😅 You’re not making it sound particularly enticing my saying the only thing you remember from Season One is the episode that bored me to tears! One whole season in exchange for moderate greatness in the next one doesn’t really sound like the best deal…🤔
