The Meet the Book Blogger Tag

“It was the middle of an autumn downpour when Tobias first met Henry Silver.”

First line in Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh

It’s time for a tag! I was tagged by Naemi @A Bookowl’s Corner to do the Meet the Book Blogger Tag a while ago and now I’m finally getting around to it. I’ve gotten quite a few new followers lately, so a tag with a bunch of personal stuff about me seemed appropriate. Thank you to Naemi for tagging me and to everyone else: Go follow her immediately!

The Rules:

  • Nominated bloggers can nominate ten other bloggers.
  • Use the same questions from the tag.
  • Tag the original creator and the blogger who tagged you

Who is your all-time favorite book character?

That is so hard to answer! As the person I am, I need to follow the rules and only pick one character, of course. And that character is Vasya from the Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden. I just couldn’t pick anyone else because this is the best execution of the “strong female character” I’ve ever seen, and I doubt anything is ever going to top it. I love Vasya and aspire to have her courage every day.

I need to mention two other characters, though (just to show who was in the running), and those are Katniss from The Hunger Games and Willem from A Little Life. Katniss for being the first introverted heroine I ever read about, and Willem for being the best human being in any book.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which book would you take with you? (Survival books do not count)

Let’s just say I wouldn’t have survived on a desert island even if I’d brought survival books, so I would take a book that I could just enjoy in my final moments. It would probably be Carry On by Rainbow Rowell because I’m sure the humor and lightheartedness in there would keep my spirits high. It’s also very reminiscent of Harry Potter, so it’s almost two books in one, and that’s how I would cheat.

What’s your most unpopular book opinion?

Lol, unpopular opinions are all I have. However, I feel like most people would answer this with a popular book they didn’t like… So I’m not going to do that, of course. Instead, I’m going to talk about my love for a book that gets a lot of hate: Eragon by Christopher Paolini. When I was younger I read that book over and over again, like, whenever I spotted it on my library’s shelves, it was going home with me. I couldn’t get enough! Didn’t care much for the rest of the series, so Eragon works like a standalone for me, and I really should do a reread again soon.

What’s your weirdest bookish habit?

Since joining the bookish community, I’ve become aware of this very weird thing that I do. It seems like most readers prefer to stop a reading session at the end of a chapter because, yes, that’s just a natural break in the story. I can’t do that, though. I have to read those first one or two pages of the next chapter so that I stop on a page full of text. You get what I mean? Like, the page with the chapter number/title is an easy page to read because there is less text on it… so I might as well read that before I stop.
If you want to go and unfollow now, I totally get it. But I have always done this and never thought of it as weird. It was just something child-me found perfectly reasonable, and now I can’t stop.

What character would you bring to a family event as your fake partner?

A really hard question. It would need to be someone who has great social skills because they’re going to get a lot of attention. I think Gansey from The Raven Cycle could be a good choice. I’m definitely confident he won’t make a scene, and everyone in my family would probably love him by the end of the day because he’s the embodiment of the “well behaved young man”.

What made you decide to start a book blog?

The same reason so many others decide to start book blogging: I had no one to talk to about the books I read. However, I didn’t actually intend to talk to people online either by starting this blog, which, yes, that sounds weird. I hadn’t expected anyone to actually follow my blog. I just wanted a place where I could write my thoughts down, but I needed it to be public, otherwise, I would never actually do any writing. No one was going to find my site anyway. Well… That didn’t turn out exactly how I’d planned it, but I’m grateful because it turns out it’s actually a lot more fun talking to other people than to myself. Who knew!

What about reading and books do you love the most?

Without needing to think about it, the escapism. My life outside of blogging and reading isn’t all that great with me having social anxiety and very complicated relationships with family members, so reading is my break. It just mutes all the worries for a little while.

What is your field of study/desired profession/current profession?

So I studied International Business Communication with European Studies and English (a mouthful) with zero plans about what I wanted to do with it. I guess at some point my “desired profession” was to work for the EU somehow, but I also knew that was never going to happen. I just needed an answer for those occasions when someone (read: grandparents) would ask what job I could get with that education. I’m not the type of person who could ever work 60 hours a week.

So my current profession is mail carrier, which is honestly the most perfect job I could get. No, I don’t use my education all that much except for the fact that good communication skills are always an advantage. I definitely don’t have any regrets about taking an education because I went through some important personal growth during those three years where I actually learned what it was like to be confident in myself. Wild experience, I tell ya!

What are some book recommendations that became your favorites/obsessions?

It’s hard for me to just mention one person who was behind a recommendation that became my favorite. I usually have to have several people recommend it before I read it. However, I know that Regan from PeruseProject on BookTube made me aware of quite a few series that later became my favorites: Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden, Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness, and The Queen’s Thief by Megan Whalen Turner just to name a few.

What is the book you shove down everyone’s throat?

Well, there might be a few candidates, and since I’ve mentioned Winternight Trilogy twice in this post already, you might have guessed that was one of them. It’s also very hard for me not to mention Natasha Pulley or her Watchmaker of Filigree Street in every post, but I really try! Although, I wouldn’t say I “shove them down everyone’s throat”. I just mention them a lot. That’s not the same (right?).

Who do you tag?

I’m taking full advantage of the fact that the rules for this tag don’t force me to tag anyone, so I’m skipping that. I feel like I’ve seen so many people do this tag, but if you haven’t and want to it, I’d love to see your answers!

That was a some personal stuff about me so you might know me better. Thanks again to Naemi for the tag, this was fun but difficult to fill out. If you want to, let me know some of your answers for these questions down in the comments. Happy reading!

  1. Okay, I thought me fact-checking books was weird, but after reading your habit, I might have to reevaluate that πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I mean, stopping after a full page ot text? 😳 How does that even work? Like, what if it ends in the middle of a scene?? Please tell me you at least finish the sentence you’re reading?! πŸ˜… Of course, I would totally unfollow you over this if you hadn’t gotten me addicted to your posts under false pretenses of being a normal reader 😁

However – you’re not alone in liking Eragon! I mean, I don’t really care for the ending, once Elves come into play, and never finished Eldest, but I have reread the first 80% of Eragon quite a few times!

Also, can I just mention that I love that the line you picked for this post is from Silver in the Woods? πŸ₯° And that Vasya is your favorite character? I mean, I already knew that, but still 😍

And Regan also made me read The Thief (I know, I know, I’m supposed to continue with this series πŸ˜…) and (if I remember correctly) Chaos Walking!

    1. I’m truly sorry πŸ˜‚ But no, of course, I don’t stop in the middle of a sentence! I finish the paragraph so that’s a perfectly reasonable place to stop. And remember, I read a lot on public transport. When I reach my stop, I can’t just say “oh I need to finish the chapter” before getting off πŸ˜‚ But I’m glad my efforts towards appearing normal is paying off πŸ˜‰

I’m also glad you liked Eragon too! I don’t remember minding the Elves too much in that book but they were definitely the reason I was so bored with Eldest and probably the rest of the series.

And the line from Silver in the Wood just came to me as the perfect one. It literally talks about meeting someone, and if I’m not mistaken, it was one of the first books I made you read. I don’t think I’ve ever picked a first line more appropriate πŸ˜„

      1. I guess you not stopping mid-sentence does make me feel a bit more relieved πŸ˜‚ Although our habits of reading on public transport to seem to be quite different. Whenever I’m on a bus or train, I usually know about how long the journey is going to take, so if I don’t think I’ll be able to read another chapter (or at least up to the next bigger paragaraph break – like, you know, the kind where there is a blank line or *** in between) until we get to my stop, I usually put the book away and spend those last few minutes looking out the window instead πŸ˜‰ The only time I will put the book down somewhere mid-scene is literally when I’m at home and some kind of meal is done. With three siblings, you need to be fast before everything good is eaten! But then I will dutifully finish that chapter first thing afterwards 😊

And now I appreciate that first line even more! I hadn’t thought of it that way, but yes, Silver in the Wood was the first in a series of very good recommendations πŸ₯°

      2. But what if you’re reading a book with very long chapters!? All those minutes wasted! I need every minute I can get to keep up with the reading speed of the bookish community. However, I guess that doesn’t explain why I feel so horrible whenever the arrival of my bus stop actually aligns with the end of a chapter πŸ˜… It does happen occasionally and that’s when I curse myself for not stopping one page earlier πŸ˜‚

      3. I do waste a lot of minutes, I guess πŸ˜‚ But I’m also terrified of getting so invested in the story somewhere mid-chapter that I’ll forget to get off at my stop, so my anxiety about that would keep me from enjoying what I’m reading if I cut things too close… I guess we’re just both a bit weird 😁

  2. omg yes i agree- i absolutely NEED to read at least 2-3 pages of the next chapter just to brace myself for what will come when i get back to reading heheheh
International Business Communication with European Studies and English honestly sounds super fun and oh! i really need to check the winterlight trilogy out then~ great post, you’re super funny and i love your personality!!

    1. You have no idea how grateful I am to hear that someone else shares my weird habit! I really didn’t think anyone would relate. And you definitely need to check out the Winternight Trilogy, and I hope you end up liking it. Thank you for such a sweet comment! 😊

  3. It’s always so interesting to read details about other people’s reading habits!
I didn’t know there was so much hate towards Eragon- I love the book. It was the first fantasy series I read and it got me hooked on the genre, so I can’t judge it very objectively. Plus, it features dragons, so it has a very special place in my heart.

I won’t pretend I understand exactly what your field of studies involved, but International Business Communication with European Studies and English sounds really cool. I find studies with very long titles extremely fascinating for some reason πŸ˜….

As for your weird reading habit, I hadn’t heard of anyone doing that until now. It could never be me, but it’s interesting. I would keep thinking about the rest of the chapter until my next reading session if I did that and I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on anything else πŸ˜‚

    1. I also don’t think the hate towards Eragon is too outspoken, but I’ve still seen it here and there and been so confused!

Haha glad you love a long title because I definitely learned to hate saying it πŸ˜‚ But it covered a lot of topics too (communication, marketing, European politics and culture), so I guess it had to be long.

And yes, it’s a very weird habit I’ve got and I think you’ve got a fair point for not adopting it. However, my standard setting is thinking about the book I’m reading and not being able to concentrate, so it really doesn’t matter where I stop πŸ˜… At least if the book is awesome.
